SAFEGUARDING POLICIES & PROCEDURES

New Mills Band is committed to protecting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults associated with the Band.

Following the Brass Bands England ‘Bandsafe’ guidance, we have adopted a range of policies and procedures to make sure that everyone is safe and protected while taking part in our band community and its activities. These are reviewed annually and submitted to Brass Bands England to make sure we meet their requirements. All members are expected to adhere to these policies and procedures. Two people within the Band have completed up-to-date ‘Bandsafe’ training. All personnel working with children and vulnerable adults or who have access to their personal information have DBS clearance. If you have any queries about our policies and procedures please raise them using the form on the contact page of the website.

In addition, all members of NMB sign up to our code of conduct, which stipulates that all band members have a responsibility for safeguarding, and as such have a duty of care for each other. Inappropriate behaviour and language will not be accepted, either at rehearsals or engagements (see below for appropriate and inappropriate behaviours). Anyone who has a concern about the behaviour of others should raise this with the Chair as soon as possible.

Appropriate Behaviours

  • Treat other members, including young people, with respect and dignity

  • Encourage and support young people in the band, avoiding having 'favourites'

  • Avoid being alone with members under 18 unless you are their parent/carer

  • If it is necessary to be alone with a child, ensure another adult knows where you are and how long you will be, invite the child to bring a friend, and leave the door open and stay in plain view

  • Avoid physical contact with children in the band unless it is necessary for an activity or someone is at risk of injury

  • When physical contact is required for an activity, ensure you have the permission of the child

  • If a child or young person talks to you about something confidential, ensure they understand that you will not share the information without their consent except in specific circumstances relating to safeguarding

  • If you have a safeguarding concern, follow the Band's safeguarding procedures and contact the Chair as soon as possible

  • Avoid contact with child members outside band activities unless as part of a family friendship

  • If you are acting in a teaching capacity, the giving and receiving of gifts to child members should generally be avoided.  Token gifts should be agreed in advance with the Chair

Inappropriate Behaviours

  • Hitting or striking any other band member

  • Verbally abusing (including shouting or swearing at) any other band member

  • Deliberately humiliating or undermining another band member

  • Inappropriate intimate contact, sexual conversations – or use of sexual innuendo – with a child or young person, or in the presence of a child or young person

  • Developing, or implying, sexual relationships with children and young people in the band

  • Encouraging, or knowingly being involved in, another band member committing a crime

  • Taking illegal substances before or during band activities

  • Being intoxicated at a band event

  • Using digital technology to groom a child or adult or to abuse them in any other way

  • Creating, sharing or downloading abusive images of children or adults

  • Bringing the Band into disrepute through inappropriate use of social media
